We have been waiting for this for over a decade, Anjung Station will finally open in October! This means new subway lines and points of access. Keep reading to learn more.
Anjung Station (안중역)
Anjung Station, located in the western part of Pyeongtaek, is set to open in October 2024 as part of the Seohae Line (서해선). The Seohae Line is a major regional rail line designed to better connect the western side of Gyeonggi-do and improve economic development. Therefore, Anjung Station represents a significant improvement in public transportation for the western region of Pyeongtaek which hosts one of Korea’s most important international ports but no rail connectivity.
When and Where
What we know about the project right now remains limited.
- Opening Date: Scheduled for October 31, 2024, coinciding with the full opening of the Seohae Line and the Pyeongtaek-Poseung rail section.
- Location: Anjung-eup, Pyeongtaek. The station will be closely connected to key developments in the surrounding area, including residential zones and commercial projects. Search 안중역 in Naver to find the exact location.
Please note that Anjung-eup Station (as of 2024) exists in the countryside outside of the Anjung city center. This means it’s a 40-minute walk, 17-minute bus, or 8-minute taxi to the main town. Additionally, it’s a 1-hour walk, 40-minute bus ride, 21-minute bike ride, or 7-minute taxi from Ma-ahn San Hiking area.
Depending on where you live in Paengseong (The area surrounding Camp Humphreys), Anjung Station could be either a 15 min – 35 minute commute.
Background and Development
Anjung Station will be crucial for addressing the transportation challenges faced by residents in western Pyeongtaek. If you have ever commuted in the area, you know road congestion on National Route 38 has been a persistent issue. Thankfully, the new station is expected to drastically reduce travel times, especially between Anjung and Pyeongtaek Station, cutting the journey from nearly 54 minutes by bus to just 14 minutes by subway.
The opening of Anjung Station is part of a broader plan to improve transportation infrastructure in Pyeongtaek. The administrative district continues to experience rapid population growth due to various urban development projects. Future expansions are also planned.
Future Home of a KTX Station
The coolest planned expansion at Anjung Station is the anticipated KTX service at Anjung Station. Expected to open in 2028, this service will provide a high-speed rail connection between western Pyeongtaek and key locations across South Korea.
Key Connections and Travel Times
The KTX should provide the following access.
Anjung to Seoul
The introduction of the KTX-Ieum, the newer generation of high-speed trains, will drastically shorten travel times. When the service is fully operational, it is expected to take less than 45 minutes to travel from Anjung to Seoul Station
Regional Travel
The KTX line will connect Anjung with major cities along the western coast of Korea, including Hongseong, Gunsan, and Mokpo. The train will utilize both the Seohae Line and the Gyeongbu High-Speed Rail (경부고속선), providing seamless travel to destinations across the country.
A Boost to Airport Accessibility
The KTX at Anjung Station may make some international travel more convenient. Pyeongtaek-si residents will be able to reach Gimpo International Airport via connections to Gimpo Airport Station along the Seohae Line. This may also mean better connections to Incheon Airport.
Expected Local Impact According to Media
Once opened, Anjung Station is expected to become a major transit hub. Articles and promoters say it will provide a boost to West Pyeongtaek’s economy and ease the pressure on road traffic. Of course, who knows how it will truly work out in real-time.
