Renting Ski and Snowboard Gear for the Season in South Korea
For winter sports fans living in South Korea, renting gear for the season is easy and often very affordable (As low as 80,000 KRW for the whole season). Many ski and snowboarders don’t buy their own gear, instead they rent their equipment from resorts or from independent shops for the season. In short, you don’t have to give up on enjoying winter just because you don’t have your own gear.
Rental vs. Purchase: Quick Math
Let’s start with talking about the money. Let’s look at a very brief price comparison between what it costs to rent for the season v. purchasing equiptment:
- Season Rental Rental: 80,000–400,000 KRW total per season
- Full Gear Purchase (new): 1,500,000–2,500,000 KRW
As you can see, renting can be a much better deal financially. Additional reasons to rent gear for the season include:
- Storage: Not everyone lives in a home big enough to keep gear comfortably year round.
- Flexibility: Try out different styles or upgrade year to year without committing to a purchase.
- Growing Kids: Year-to-year, kids go through gear fast. It’s often much smarter to rent each year instead of continuing to purchase new gear every year.
Now that you understand the benefits of renting your gear for the whole season, let’s explore how to make that happen in South Korea.
About Seasonal Rentals in Korea
Renting your seasonal ski/ snowboard gear in Korea looks something like this:

- Choose an Indie Shop or Resort
- Some ski parks have their own seasonal rental programs.
- Independent shops near ski resorts often offer seasonal packages that include boots, skis/boards, and poles.
- Typical Package Inclusions
- Skis or snowboard
- Boots
- Poles (for skis)
- Helmet (sometimes extra)
- Typical Gear Quality Ratings in Korea
- 새상품급 (Saesangpum-geup): Like New
- Literally “new product level.”
- Gear was barely used, often just a few times.
- A급 / AAA급 (A-geup / Triple A-geup): Excellent Condition
- Popular in ads (Often used on the Dr. Spark website).
- Very well-maintained, minor scratches only, performance unaffected.
- B급 (B-geup): Good / Normal Condition
- Functional, shows moderate wear (scratches, faded colors).
- Still fine for recreational use.
- C급 (C-geup): Heavily Used
- Noticeable damage or repairs.
- Usually older models, cheap price.
- 새상품급 (Saesangpum-geup): Like New
- Prices
- Seasonal rental packages usually cost 80,000–400,000 KRW depending on brand, quality, and location.
Yes, you read that right. You can rent a “set” (ski/snowboard, bindings, boots, poles) for as low as 80,000 KRW for the entire season (As of 2025). The gear quality might not be perfect, but it gets you on the slopes.

We can’t get too deep into EXACTLY how renting works because it’s going to change based on where you rent. However, we can say that the places we interviewed made it all sound quite simple. Just make sure to ask all the questions you can image, and expect the unexpected because it’s your first time trying to do something in a new culture where you don’t speak the language. That’s part of the adventure.
What to Ask When Renting Gear
When you rent your gear for the season, consider asking the following questions:
- What are the rules for returning the gear at the end of season?
- Will the gear come freshly waxed and sharp?
- Can I exchange the gear if it’s comfortable or in good working condition?
- What are the fees if the gear is lost or damaged?
- Can you try the gear on before renting?
- What is the gear quality rating?
- Do you require a deposit?
Let us know if you have questions we should add to this list and we will update. We are sure there is something we are missing.
Independent, In-Person Shops with Season Rentals
The following are independent shops we have talked to about doing season rentals and places we recommend trying. Although we have never done a season rental ourselves (we have our own gear), we have rented from both resorts and independent shops for daily rentals. We found that the independent shops have far better gear than the resorts. Therefore, we are offering indie spots for securing seasonal gear rentals:

Resorts Have More Complicated Seasonal Rental Requirements
Depending on where you rent your gear, you might need a Korean bank account, Korean smartphone number, and your FRC (Also know as an ARC). The large resorts often require long-term rentals to go through their websites, when this happens, you will need all your paperwork in order and help with managing their Korean only payment and reservation systems.
Additional Resource
The Korean ski and snowboard community use the website Dr. Spark to find rentals and gear. The site is all in Korean but you can use ChatGPT and Google Translate to Chrome Extension to find your way around.

The website Dr. Spark (drspark.net) is one of Korea’s biggest online ski/snowboard communities and forums where people share information, reviews, secondhand sales, and ads for things like season lockers, lessons, and gear rentals. You’ll often find posts or promotions from local ski shops advertising season rentals (시즌 렌탈) and season lockers (시즌 락커/시즌방) in their 홍보 (promotion) and 장터 (marketplace) sections.
