Doosan Bears: Experience the Heart of Korean Baseball
Baseball might be America’s pastime, but in Korea, it’s a national passion. The Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) League offers an unforgettable experience for fans — from electric atmospheres to unique cultural twists on the game. At the center of it all stands one of the league’s most legendary teams: the Doosan Bears.
A Legacy of Excellence: History of the Doosan Bears
The Doosan Bears are one of the founding members of the KBO League, established in 1982 under the original name, the OB Bears. Based in Seoul, they quickly became a powerhouse, winning the inaugural Korean Series in 1982. The team later changed its name to the Doosan Bears in 1999 when the Doosan Group took over ownership.

Over the decades, the Bears have claimed six Korean Series championships (1982, 1995, 2001, 2015, 2016, and 2019) and have consistently made it to the playoffs. Their success and rich history have earned them one of the most loyal and enthusiastic fanbases in the league.
Meet the Stars: My 2 Favorite Doosan Players
The Doosan Bears have produced and hosted numerous star players, some of whom have made their mark internationally. Two of my favorite players include:
- Yang Eui-ji – one of the most respected players in the KBO. As a veteran catcher, he combines strong leadership with excellent batting skills. Fans admire his ability to guide pitchers, control the game, and produce big hits in important moments. His calm and reliable presence has made him the true leader of the Bears.
- Kim Jae-hwan – adds power and excitement to the lineup. Known for his home runs and high RBI (Run Batted In) numbers, he has carried the Doosan offense for many seasons. With awards such as MVP and Golden Glove, he is recognized as one of the league’s top sluggers. His powerful swing and steady performance always keep fans on the edge of their seats.

Many Doosan players have international experience, making it a great team for U.S. service members to follow, especially if you’re used to MLB-style play.
More Than a Game: Fan Culture & Stadium Experience
Attending a Doosan Bears game at Jamsil Baseball Stadium is unlike anything you’ve experienced back in the States. Located in southern Seoul, this massive stadium (shared with rival team LG Twins) is a hub of excitement.
From the moment the game starts, expect:
- Cheerleaders leading energetic chants and dances for every player.
- Drums, horns, and singing from dedicated fan sections — each player has their own unique chant.
- Mid-inning performances, giveaways, and audience games that keep the crowd buzzing.
- Street food and Korean-style snacks inside the stadium — think fried chicken, tteokbokki, and cold beer
It’s not just baseball — it’s a cultural event.

Why the Doosan Bears Are Great for U.S. Military Members
Whether you’re stationed at Camp Humphreys, Osan, or Yongsan, getting to a Doosan game is easy. Jamsil Stadium is centrally located and accessible by subway. Games are typically held in the evenings and on weekends, making it a perfect weekend outing.
Watching the Bears is also a great way to:
- Practice your Korean in a fun setting.
- Connect with locals and other expats.
- Discover how Korea puts its own spin on an American classic.

About the “Shared Voices” Initiative
South of Seoul volunteers collaborate with Korean public schools to provide students meaningful opportunities to expand their English communication experience while sharing their world views with the international community in Korea.
Through guided projects, students in Korean classrooms use digital and creative tools to express themselves in English, building confidence in their communication skills. At the same time, they learn to approach writing with empathy. They participate in guided discussions that consider different perspectives, practicing cultural awareness, and developing a deeper understanding of how their words can connect communities across borders.
It’s important to know that schools in South Korea are becoming increasingly diverse, this includes the students who participate in South of Seoul programs like “Shared Voices.”
