Yesan has plenty to explore, and you don’t have to fit everything into one day.
From historic sites and peaceful walking trails to temples, scenic views, cafés, and apple farms, there are plenty of reasons to slow down and spend some time discovering this part of Chungcheongnam-do.
During our time in Yesan, we found places that gave us a deeper look at the area’s history and culture, along with quiet places where we could simply walk, enjoy the scenery, or stop for a break. Some stops may only take a little time, while others may make you want to stay longer.
Whether you’re planning a day trip or turning your visit into an overnight getaway, these are some of the places we explored and recommend adding to your Yesan itinerary. I’ve also included one-day and two-day itinerary ideas to help you put everything together.
Use them as a starting point and adjust them to your own pace. You don’t have to see everything. Leave some room for a local restaurant, a café, or an unexpected stop along the way. Sometimes that’s the best part of exploring Korea.
Things to Do in Yesan
There is more than one way to experience Yesan. History, Buddhist culture, rural landscapes, walking trails, cafés, and local agriculture can all become part of your trip.
Here are some of the places we visited and recommend exploring.
Sudeoksa Temple
Sudeoksa is one of the places we spent the most time during our visit to Yesan. Give yourself time to explore the temple grounds, enjoy the surrounding mountain scenery, and visit the museum.
You can visit Sudeoksa as part of a day trip, or experience the temple more deeply through an overnight Templestay.
If you’re interested in staying overnight, read about our experience during a Sudeoksa Templestay and our Templestay in Korea guide for practical information about what to expect, what to bring, and how to prepare.
If an overnight stay isn’t for you, South of Seoul also has a Sudeok Temple Day Trip Itinerary to help you plan your visit.

Yedangho Lake
If you have more time to explore Yesan, Yedangho offers plenty of reasons to add another stop to your trip.
One of the area’s best-known attractions is the 402-meter Yedangho Suspension Bridge, but there’s more here than simply walking across the bridge. The Yedangho tourism area also includes a musical fountain, observation areas, a monorail, and lakeside walking paths.
If you enjoy walking, the Slow Lake Trail offers another way to experience Yedangho. The trail connects the suspension bridge area with the surrounding lakeside scenery, so you can decide whether you want a quick stop at the bridge or more time exploring the lake.
With several things to do in one area, Yedangho could easily become a larger part of your day. Rather than trying to squeeze it into an already busy itinerary, consider swapping it for another stop if lakeside scenery, walking, or outdoor attractions are more your style.
Check current operating information before visiting, especially if you want to ride the monorail or see the musical fountain.

It’s a great stop for visitors who want to add nature and outdoor activities to their Yesan itinerary.

Deoksan Metasequoia Trail
The Deoksan Metasequoia Trail offers an easy outdoor stop while exploring the Deoksan area. Tall metasequoia trees line the path, creating a scenic place for a walk and a chance to slow down between some of the area’s historic and cultural sites.
Yesan County includes the Metasequoia Trail in its own suggested travel routes, pairing a walk here with other Deoksan attractions.

Deoksan Hyanggyo Confucian School
Deoksan Hyanggyo offers another look at Korea’s history and traditional culture while you’re exploring the Deoksan area.
Hyanggyo were local Confucian schools established to educate students and honor Confucian scholars. Today, surviving hyanggyo provide visitors with a chance to see traditional architecture and learn about the role Confucian education played in Korean communities.
Because Deoksan Hyanggyo is close to other stops in this guide, it’s easy to add without building an entire day around one location.

Yun Bong-gil Memorial Hall and Chunguisa Shrine
If you’re going to spend time exploring Yesan, learning about Yun Bong-gil adds important historical context to the area.
Born in Yesan in 1908, Yun Bong-gil became an important figure in Korea’s independence movement during Japanese colonial rule. The historic site includes Chunguisa Shrine, which houses his portrait, as well as the Yun Bong-gil Memorial Hall, his birthplace Gwanghyeondang, and Jeohandang, the home where he grew up.
The memorial hall introduces visitors to his life and major accomplishments through its permanent exhibition, while the surrounding historic site allows you to explore several places connected to his life.
Give yourself some time here rather than thinking of it as one quick museum stop.Yunbonggil Memorial Hall and Chunguisa Shrine

Together, the sites offer visitors an important look at Yesan’s connection to modern Korean history.

Sapgyo Stone Bodhisattva Standing Statue
The Sapgyo Stone Bodhisattva Standing Statue offers another opportunity to connect your Yesan trip with Korea’s Buddhist history.
Located on the slopes of Suamsan Mountain, the large stone Bodhisattva dates to the Goryeo period and is recognized as a Korean national treasure. The figure wears a hexagonal crown and has a simple, square face with a gentle smile. Its style is considered representative of regional Buddhist sculpture from the Goryeo period.
This is a smaller stop than some of the destinations in this guide, but that’s part of what makes exploring places like Yesan interesting. Not every historic site needs to be a huge tourist attraction.

Gwangdeoksa Temple
If you have additional time, Gwangdeoksa Temple gives you another Buddhist site to explore while traveling through the Deoksan area.
Rather than trying to squeeze every temple into one itinerary, consider this an optional stop. If Buddhist history and traditional temple architecture are especially interesting to you, add it. If your day is already full, save it for another visit.
That’s the nice thing about these itineraries. You can make them your own.

Okkye Reservoir
Okkye Reservoir offers one of the quieter stops on this list and a glimpse into Yesan’s rural landscape.
The reservoir serves as a water source for the Deoksan area, but for visitors, the surrounding scenery offers a completely different feeling from the temples, museums, and historic sites you’ll experience throughout the day.
It’s also why I like putting this stop toward the end of the one-day itinerary. After spending the day learning and exploring, sometimes you just want somewhere peaceful to slow down for a bit.

PINEGROVE Bakery Cafe makes an easy place to slow down and take a break between stops.

PINEGROVE
You can’t spend the entire day running from one historic site to another. Sometimes you need a café break!
PINEGROVE makes an easy stop while exploring the Deoksan area and gives you a chance to sit down before continuing with the rest of your itinerary.
One of the things I enjoy about traveling around Korea is working these kinds of stops into the day. A café doesn’t have to be the main destination to become part of the experience.

Yesan Permanent Market has become a popular stop for visitors looking to explore the area’s food and market culture. (Image from https://english.visitkorea.or.kr/)
Yesan Permanent Market
Of course, exploring a new place eventually makes you hungry!
Yesan Permanent Market offers a different way to experience the area through food and local market culture. The traditional market was revitalized through a collaboration between Yesan County and Baek Jong-won of The Born Korea, bringing new life to the market while embracing its retro atmosphere.
The market has since become one of Yesan’s popular destinations, with visitors coming to explore the market and, most importantly, eat!
If local food and traditional markets are part of what you enjoy about traveling in Korea, consider making time for the market around lunch or dinner. You could also swap it for one of the café stops in the itineraries below if food sounds more appealing than another cup of coffee.
And really, there’s no wrong answer there. It’s your Yesan adventure.

Eunsung Apple Farm and Winery
Of course, if you’re exploring Yesan, you can’t forget the apples!
Apples are one of Yesan’s representative local products, and you’ll see that connection reflected throughout the area. An apple farm or winery adds something completely different to an itinerary filled with temples, museums, and historic sites.
Eunsung Apple Farm and Winery makes a natural addition to the second day of a Yesan trip, especially if you’re interested in experiencing more of the area’s agricultural side.
Because farm experiences and activities can change with the growing season, check what’s available before making your trip.
If you’re visiting during apple season and want to make apples an even bigger part of your trip, check out South of Seoul’s Fall Apple Picking in South Korea guide.

Want to Customize Your Yesan Trip?
The itineraries below are based on the places we explored, but they aren’t the only way to experience Yesan.
If lakeside scenery and outdoor attractions are high on your list, consider making more time for Yedangho and its suspension bridge, walking paths, and other attractions.
If exploring local markets and trying different foods sounds more like your kind of day, add Yesan Permanent Market instead.
Use these itineraries as a starting point. Swap stops based on your interests, leave room for something unexpected, and don’t worry about seeing everything in one trip.
Sometimes finding something you weren’t looking for ends up being one of the best parts of exploring Korea.
One-Day Yesan Adventure
If you only have one day, you can still see quite a bit of Yesan. Don’t worry about trying to visit every place on this list. This itinerary gives you an easy starting point that you can adjust depending on what interests you most.
Morning: Sudeoksa Temple
Start your morning at Sudeoksa Temple. Give yourself time to explore the temple grounds, take in the surrounding mountain scenery, and visit the amazing museum.
Late Morning: Deoksan Metasequoia Trail and Deoksan Hyanggyo
After Sudeoksa, walk the Deoksan Metasequoia Trail and then visit Deoksan Hyanggyo Confucian School.
These stops keep you in the Deoksan area and let you add both outdoor scenery and local history to your morning.
Afternoon: History and a Café Break
Spend your afternoon exploring Yunbonggil Memorial Hall and Chunguisa Shrine.
Afterward, stop at PINEGROVE for a break before continuing with the rest of your day.
Late Afternoon: Okkye Reservoir
Finish your day with the peaceful views at Okkye Reservoir before heading home.
There’s something nice about ending a busy day of exploring somewhere you can simply slow down and enjoy the scenery.
Two-Day Yesan Getaway
If you have more time, turn your trip into an overnight getaway. Staying in the Yesan or Deoksan area means you don’t have to rush through everything in one day.
Look for a local pension or other accommodation that works for your family or travel group, and enjoy having a little more time to explore.
Day 1: Sudeoksa and Deoksan
Start your first day with:
- Sudeoksa Temple
- Deoksan Metasequoia Trail
- Deoksan Hyanggyo Confucian School
- PINEGROVE
- Okkye Reservoir
- Stay the night in Yesan or Deoksan
This keeps most of your first day focused around Sudeoksa and Deoksan while mixing temples, history, walking, café time, and scenery.
There’s no reason to rush off to another part of Yesan when you already have plenty to explore here.
Day 2: More Yesan History, Culture, and Apples
For your second day:
- Yunbonggil Memorial Hall and Chunguisa Shrine
- Sapgyo Stone Bodhisattva Standing Statue
- Eunsung Apple Farm and Winery
Start with some of Yesan’s modern history at the Yun Bong-gil historic site before moving much further back in time with the Goryeo-era Sapgyo Stone Bodhisattva.
Then finish your Yesan getaway with something completely different: apples!
Depending on the season, check what’s available at the farm before you visit. If apple experiences aren’t available during your trip, don’t worry. Leave that space open for another local restaurant, café, or unexpected stop you find along the way.
Make the Yesan Itinerary Your Own
These itineraries aren’t rules. They’re simply an easy starting point for exploring Yesan.
Leave some extra time for a local restaurant, café, or an unexpected stop along the way. You don’t have to see everything. Sometimes the best part of exploring Korea is simply having time to enjoy where you are.
If somewhere catches your attention, stay longer. That’s part of exploring too.
