The search for western breakfast in the morning may be a frustrating experience in South Korea. Maybe the place looks fantastic on Instagram but you learn it opens after 11:00 am. That’s why we organized the Gangnam Breakfast and Brunch post based on opening times.
What ‘Best’ Means to South of Seoul
Best has no intrinsic meaning. We choose our ‘best’ options based on the fact that these locations have solid reviews on Naver, may be recommended in groups like Pyeongtaek Travelers or Seoul Food & Fun, or are open during convenient hours. We’ve done our best to research locations that people with a Western pallet may enjoy.
About Morning in Gangnam-gu
Gangnam-gu is a large business and residential district. It tends to have wide streets and tall buildings. Gangnam-gu contains over 25+ subway stops across 6 subway lines. It may take up to 4 hours to walk from the northernmost point in Gangnam to the southernmost point of Gangnam-gu. Additionally, it takes about 1 hour to walk from western Gangnam-gu to eastern Gangnam-gu.
Since Gangnam-gu is large, it’s not easy to simply walk around and find breakfast when you stay in the area. These ten restaurants may be spread over a wide area so simply because you are in Gangnam-gu does not mean each of these locations is within walking distance.
Possible Cultural Differences
You may or may not experience the following cultural differences when you go for breakfast or brunch. We mention these cultural differences since many international guests feel surprised by the following points:
- Taste: Keep in mind these restaurants exist in South Korea. This means they may not be trying to exactly match what you enjoy at home. Instead, chefs may adapt recipes for the local taste or local ingredients. This means you may find new flavors and surprising experiences. Such newness is the purpose of travel.
- Service: In South Korea we often share food. We rarely order our own meal and just eat it alone. Instead, we buy a few meals and share them. This means food may not come out at once, serving sizes may be large, etc.
- Prices: In South Korea, Western breakfast and brunch are premium products and expensive. Bacon prices here can be like gold. Expect to pay far more than you do at home for what may not feel special to you but feels very special to those of us that live here.
- Opening times: Kitchens often aren’t fully ready at opening time. It may take an extra 15-20 minutes to get focused once the doors open. Additionally, they will not usually be in a hurry to serve the meal. It’s often ‘slow food’.
