About Malls and Department Stores in South Korea
Malls and departments stores in South Korea or both similar and different from western versions of the same things. In South Korea, these locations tend to specifically cater to solving all of life’s little problems in one place. That means there will be locksmiths, grocery stores, things for pets, things for families, places to fix your car, and even classes for life enrichment.
Brands Available at Malls and Department Stores
You will find both international brands and Korean-specific brands. However, shopping will lean toward brands popular in Korea or across Asia. It is likely that you will be unfamiliar with such brands. It may take time for you to learn what each new store offers and which stores meet your needs. This can be very overwhelming and uncomfortable at first, especially when you already have brands you love back home. Give yourself plenty of time to explore and don’t give up! It’s part of the adventure.
Sizing in South Korea
Sizing will also be different when shopping in Korea. We recommend researching what size you would be in Korea before going shopping. This will help limit some of the stress once you find a store you are interested in. If you are a woman over a size 12 trouser or size 8 shoe, you may find trouble finding things that fit. However, it’s still worth shopping since Korea has a great deal of unisex or free-size clothes that are quite cute.
Lots of Family Fun and Support
Malls in Korea are designed to provide support for families. That means you will usually find a lot of activities and family-friendly events in these locations. During non-pandemic times, First Village has a summer water park. Starfield has kids’ play areas that are open year-round. All of the spots listed below have restaurants everyone in the family will enjoy.
Finding Parking at Malls and Department Stores
All of the malls and department stores have large parking garages, however, that doesn’t mean the parking situation doesn’t get crazy. On busy days (sunny weekends, holidays, or special events) mall and department store parking garages can take a while to get in and out of the garage. On SUPER busy days you may even need to wait for a parking spot. These aren’t normal situations, but they can occur.
Parking Fees
Ak Plaza, New Core, and Shinsagae all have paid parking. You can get discounts on parking by buying things or doing things at the mall. This discount is given at the register when you checkout. That means you will need to give the last 4 digits of your license plate number to the cashier. We recommend having a photo of your car license plate and showing that to them. It will make the process easier.
You need to know in advance, that 24-hour parking fees at AK Plaza in Pyeongtaek are around 80,000 won. We DO NOT recommend leaving your car there while traveling or visiting the area. Only park here if you plan to stay a short while and spend some money at the mall.
