Why should I join Facebook groups while living in Pyeongtaek?
Expats across South Korea rely on Facebook Groups to find jobs, restaurants, friends, communities, and more. Facebook groups provide a way to connect with people and information about South Korea in a real time. Facebook groups are powerful and effective tools to keep people informed. Since each Facebook group is independently managed by a different set of unique individuals with a different world view, joining multiple Facebook groups provides increasingly balanced access to information.
Who manages Facebook Groups and how are the rules made?
Each Facebook Group group is run by an Admin or team of Admins. These Admins may be associated with an organization or they may be individuals volunteering their time to support the community. In Pyeongtaek the majority of Facebook Groups are managed by volunteers. The volunteer Admins may choose the 1) scope of the group (local, national, focused on a particular activity), 2) establish communication guidelines, 3) manage the membership of the group, etc. Such rules and expectations are established to help the Admin manage the amount of time the group takes out of their day and to facilitate the mission of the group.
Which Facebook Groups should I join in Pyeongtaek?
In Pyeongtaek, South Korea we have a wide variety of international residents and communities. Each community brings its own unique needs and experiences. Finding the right community can feel overwhelming when you first arrive in Pyeongtaek since some groups are public, some groups are private, and sometimes the group descriptions don’t answer the questions you have. You want to choose groups that fit your goals and communication style. Some people are ok with more argumentative Facebook Groups and others find value in groups with a more relaxed communication style.
What’s the difference between the public and private Facebook Groups?
Both public and private Facebook Groups have value in unique ways. South of Seoul has identified a few areas of value that you might find important when searching for the different communities that are right for you.
- Public Facebook Groups allow posts to be visible to anyone. Posts shared in public FB groups can be seen and shared by non-members. These groups are awesome because they allow you access to the information without having to join them! Public Groups allow the information to be easily shared with other Facebook Groups or on personal feeds. Additionally, Google searches and shares posts in public Facebook Groups which means they are a great way to share information online. Groups that are designed to provide information to the larger population are often set to be Public, however, public groups may come with more rules and a less personalized experience.
- Private FB groups limit the ability for posted information to be shared inside or outside the Facebook group. That means any information shared within that FB group stays within that Facebook group unless screenshots are taken. Additionally, any information shared within that Facebook group is not visible to search engines and does not appear in Google search results. Facebook groups for communities are often set to Private since the information does not apply to the broader public. Such groups often have fewer rules and cater to a more intimate community experience.
What should I know before joining a Facebook Group in Pyeongtaek, South Korea?
Here are five tips for making a good impression:
- Reading the rules. This is the biggest thing that you need to do in order to make a good impression and maximize your experience. Many of the Facebook Group Admins have worked hard to create rules that foster a strong community. Honoring their hard work pays off.
- Follow the rules. Once you have read the rules, make sure to keep them in mind. Facebook allows you to check the Facebook Group rules in every post so that you can easily follow them.
- Remember that you are stepping into a conversation that is in full swing. There will be many things that are hard to understand so ask questions. Let folks know you are new to a group and then detail what confuses you.
- Give as much as you take. That means you need to help answer questions, say thank you, let people know how they helped you.
- Talk through your feelings and share your ideas, don’t put the emotional labor on Admins and group members. Remember that the admins are volunteering their time to help a large group of people and the Admins need each of their group members to use their words to articulate struggles in order to find solutions.

I don’t see a group that fits my needs, what are my options?
Create your own Facebook Group community. There are two ways to do this 1) find a dormant Facebook Group in Pyeongtaek that doesn’t have an active Admin and ask if you can take over the administration of the group (This is actually how we, at South of Seoul ended up managing Facebook Groups. Admins leaving the area wanted to make sure their groups didn’t die. We can’t stand to see hard work wasted, so we agreed or offered to continue the management of Legacy Facebook Groups. We don’t usually create new groups.) or 2) create your own Facebook Group from scratch. Both are great options and will give you the opportunity to build the community that is right for you.
