Did you know that Korean’s LOVE buffets and they are popular across the country! Recently, we sat down with the Songtan branch of QooQoo Sushi & Salad Buffet in Pyeongtaek-si, and they shared some tips for getting the most out of your buffet experience! They also sponsored this post to help support international residents living in Korea. Buffets are Ideal for Foreigners in Korea Buffets in Korea provide a place for culinary exploration with a safety net. Moving to or traveling in South Korea is exciting; however, eating out sometimes feels a little intimidating. Nobody wants to rely on “something new” when the whole family is hangry. Plus, you don’t have to. Instead, head to the buffet where you can mix adventure with comfort foods. Of course, going to a buffet still holds some elements of culture shock. Thankfully, The Songtan QooQoo Sushi Buffet stepped up to help create this blog of tips. They’ve been serving international residents for many years and they’ve identified a list of pointers that help people feel more comfortable. We will start with the basics and get more specific. Key Benefits of Buffets for International Residents What Is a Buffet in Korea Like? A buffet in Korea is similar to buffets you might know back home, but with some Korean details. So expect things to feel familiar, but organized in new ways. Just like many other countries, you’ll find long counters filled with dishes, many of them Korean fusion-style. Just like the US puts it’s own twist on foods from other countries, so does Korea. Common buffet menu items might include: The best part is that you can try a little bit of everything. It’s a fun way to explore Korean food and Korean versions of global foods without needing to order a whole dish you’ve never tried before. How Do Buffets Work in Korea? Generally speaking, the customer service experience will go step-by-step: Additional Buffet Tips Now that you understand the process for using the buffet, let’s talk about some of the small details you might want to know. Plates Down Below Plates often sit below the food on shelves instead of on the same level as the food. If you can’t see the plates and bowls, step back and look down. It you don’t see plates or bowls on the ledge below, you can ask a server. Sometimes they run out of plates and can run get more for you. Some Dishes Made to Order Korean buffets often have dishes made to order. These dishes may change day-to-day or by season. Keep your eye out for special foods you can order hot. If you can’t speak Korean, use Papago or ChatGPT to help with communication. Gloves and Aprons Some food may feel hard to handle with utensils, like ribs or chicken wings. In this case, you can often find gloves sitting near the utensils or request gloves from the servers. These take away the mess! Great for kids as well. Highly recommend using these. Additionally, you can request aprons for adults and kids to protect your clothing. Don’t hesitate to do this. Because of all the red and spicy foods in Korea, using aprons is common and acceptable for adults. Don’t be a hero. Kids Playrooms Always remember that kids play areas will have a few rules. Look around for signs and translate them using Papago or ChatGPT. Rules to expect include: Buffets often post their rules next to the door and they can easily be translated using Papago or ChatGpt. The following images shows the rules at the Songtan Branch of QooQoo Suchi Buffet. Menu Pricing Buffets often offer discounts based on weekdays v weekends. Weekends are often more expensive and weekdays cheaper. Additionally, on the weekends the buffets may offer additional menu items. Eating Time Limits Buffet restaurants in South Korea often have a time limit. The limits range between 1-2 hours. The time limit is often clearly listed on the menu. Keep your eye on this limit because if you go over the time period, you may be automatically charged again. This means you don’t want to just, “Hang out.” Keep this in mind when waiting for someone who arrived late to a group dinner. The time you started your buffet will usually be on the receipt that they place on your table. You can check your arrival time there. Wasted Food Fee Some buffets in South Korea may charge fees for wasting food. This means you need to take what you can eat within reason. The wasted food fee may run between 10,000 KRW to 20,000 KRW. Allergy Warnings Korea requires restaurants to post a list of foods that cause allergies used in their kitchens. This will be posted as one sign rather than by dish. The QooQoo list is shown below. Some restaurants may only have the words listed. You can use Papago or ChatGPT. Keep in mind, the list is for the WHOLE menu not menu items. This means they don’t list ingredients by dish like they might in other countries. It’s a general list that covers everything they make. Tips for Your First Visit A Note About QooQoo Songtan While buffets are welcoming everywhere, some go the extra mile to make international residents feel comfortable. QooQoo Songtan is one of those places. They offer two hours of free parking nearby, serve freshly prepared food daily, and recently upgraded their Kids Zone and BBQ Zone. Additionally, when QooQoo Sushi Buffet in Songtan noticed South of Seoul listed their business in local blogs and shared them in the Pyeongtaek Food & Fun Group, QooQoo in Songtan reached out to SOS SEC (we partner with South of Seoul) to see how they could support the international community. The Sponsored Integration Content After learning about our mission to promote easy and comfortable cultural integration, QooQoo in Songtan offered to sponsor this blog post to help international residents feel more comfortable at buffets. They also placed ads with SOS SEC that run on the South of Seoul blog and pay for the hosting and admin fees to keep South of Seoul running so that volunteers don’t need to cover these costs. We deeply appreciate this support so that SOS SEC and South of Seoul can continue to serve the community. QooQoo Sushi buffet in Songtan shares our goals: to help international residents feel at home in Korea. If you’re in the Songtan area and want your first buffet experience to be stress-free, QooQoo is ready to welcome you. Best of Pyeongtaek Poll 2024 Winners https://blog.southofseoul.net/best-of-pyeongtaek-poll-2024-winners/ Tue, 11 Feb 2025 06:57:42 +0000 https://blog.southofseoul.net/?p=21606 SOS.SEC Sponsored Content

Looking for the best restaurants, cafes, and spots for drinks in Pyeongtaek? Or maybe you are looking for the best restaurants near Camp Humphreys or Osan Air Force Base. Here are the winners of the 2024 Best of Pyeongtaek Awards! What is South of Seoul? Founded in 2015, the South of Seoul (SOS) volunteer organization supports ex-pats living outside Seoul. The SOS volunteers manage multiple Facebook groups, the South of Seoul Facebook page, the South of Seoul blog, the SOS Public Health Program, and the South of Seoul AI Assistant to help English-speaking international residents thrive living across Korea. Our volunteers adore the rich life we live south of Seoul, and we feel honored to help new arrivals discover the hidden magic it holds. For example, Pyeongtaek-si is a rewarding mix of city life and country life which can make it a challenge for new arrivals since access may feel complicated. However, with a little information like the ‘Best of Pyeongtaek Poll Winners’ list, Pyeongtaek-si can be a delightful place for new arrivals and long-term international residents alike. What is the South of Seoul Best of Pyeongtaek Poll? South of Seoul is proud to host the 8th Annual Best of Pyeongtaek Poll to celebrate our delicious and delightful community. The Best of Pyeongtaek Awards provide a chance for the international community to support their favorite people and places. How did the South of Seoul Best of Pyeongtaek Poll change in 2024? For 2024, South of Seoul added a few new categories and withdrew a few to respond to the changes in our community’s dining needs and culinary interests. Since SOS volunteers stay closely connected with the community, we adjust the categories each year to reflect changes in the community. We actively assess the current needs of the international community by analyzing the information and questions shared in our various community groups. Such an agile program design means the Best of Pyeongtaek Poll is a little different each year. Who votes in the Best of Pyeongtaek Poll? The South of Seoul Best of Pyeongtaek poll is open to the public. We make every feasible effort to reach outside the South of Seoul community into the communities around us to gain an authentic insight into the preferences of English-speaking international residents in Pyeongtaek. SOS volunteers feel confirmation bias does not serve the greater good, so we seek opinions outside of our own sphere of influence. We want the Best of Pyeongtaek Poll to hold accurate information, whether that information matches our beliefs or not. South of Seoul limits each business to 3 wins. We do this to keep the poll results engaging, helpful, and informative. In addition, since write-in votes are allowed, and some businesses may have an overwhelming advantage due to location and language ability, limiting the number of wins per business to 3 categories creates a better experience for all involved. South of Seoul volunteers want to meet the community’s authentic needs. Therefore, the South of Seoul Best of Pyeongtaek Poll provides us with the insight we need by reflecting on the opinions of others. That said, nothing about this poll is scientific. It is for fun and for community development. We level the playing field by leaving the poll open for two weeks so that community members can vote once a day and deeply support the people and businesses they love. What did you learn from the Best of Pyeongtaek Poll in 2024? When reviewing the responses to The Best of Pyeongtaek 2023 poll, we found that English-speaking international residents’ comfort zone in Pyeongtaek-si retracted in 2024 for the first time. We can see this trend based on the decrease in votes for locations beyond Sinjang-dong and Anjeong-ri. We hope this see this reverse in 2025 as we share new places across the city. In 2024,13% of Best of Pyeongtaek winners won for the first time. After a large turnover in 2023, we found many of the favorite spots continued to lead the way. It’s exciting to see so many favorite places stand the test of time. In 2024, we saw that South of Seoul continues to be a leader in information in Pyeongtaek. Our Pyeongtaek Food & Fun Facebook Group has been a powerhouse of information with the community that allows us all to come together to support people every single day. The hard work of each Pyeongtaek Food & Fun member has driven the group to become one of the most influential places for international residents living in Pyeongtaek to gather information.  In 2024 we saw United on the ROK’s influence grow across the community. They became the 3rd most-read, English-language publication in Pyeongtaek-si. We love to see our community partners growing and thriving. Congratulations to their talented volunteer team. Pyeongtaek Insight rose to the second most-read English-language publication and the South of Seoul blog came in first! Thank you to everyone for your support. In 2024, Best of Pyeongtaek Poll participants prioritized the following when choosing a restaurant 1) Parking, 2) Affordability, 3) Recommended by A friend, 4) Proximity to home, and 5) English Menu (dropped from 4th). The biggest change we saw was that people desire to stay closer to home. Enough talking, time to get down to business. *drum roll please* We are proud to announce the amazing, hard-working, talented winners of The Best of Pyeongtaek 2023. Go visit them all! BEST NEIGHBORHOODS Pyeongtaek-si offers a unique mix of urban convenience and rural charm, making it a great place for a variety of lifestyles. Whether you’re looking for a bustling city atmosphere, a quiet countryside retreat, or something in between, this area has plenty of options. From neighborhoods with easy access to public transportation and shopping to more peaceful, family-friendly communities, there’s something for everyone. Here are some of the top spots for international residents in 2024, based on accessibility, amenities, and overall livability! Learn About Gochujang at the Songtan Market https://blog.southofseoul.net/learn-about-gochujang-at-the-songtan-market/ Fri, 20 Sep 2024 01:16:00 +0000 https://blog.southofseoul.net/?p=20739 SOS.SEC Sponsored Content

Do you want to learn more about gochujang? What is its history, how it’s made, and what is it used for? Recently South of Seoul volunteers had the great privilege of helping host a Traditional Market Vendor Visit at the Songtan Market in Pyeongtaek-si. The evening included a brief lecture on the history of gochujang, a visit to a market noodle restaurant for a gochujang-making demonstration, and a gochujang sampling session. Here is what we learned. About Gochujang Gochujang (고추장), the vibrant red chili paste, is not just a culinary staple in Korea—it’s a symbol of the nation’s identity, culture, and culinary heritage. As one of the foundational ingredients in Korean cuisine, gochujang holds a significant place in the daily lives of Koreans and their culinary traditions. In this post, we explore its rich history, how it’s made, regional variations, cultural significance, and a traditional recipe to try at home. What is Gochujang (고추장)? At its essence, gochujang (고추장) is a fermented chili paste with a complex balance of spicy, sweet, and umami flavors. The sauce’s foundational ingredients generally include Korean red chili powder (gochugaru, 고춧가루), glutinous rice flour (chapssalgaru, 찹쌀가루), fermented soybean powder (meju garu, 메주가루), salt (소금), and sometimes barley malt powder (yeotgireum, 엿기름) for additional sweetness. The fermentation process lasts anywhere from 2 to 3 months, and the result is a versatile ingredient used in various dishes. Our teacher also added soju to her gochujang. Additional Ingredients Additional ingredients that might be added to the gochujang base later include: beef, strawberries, pears, apples, blueberries, garlic, ginger, etc. The more you learn about gochujang, the more versatile you realize it is. The Role of Jang (장) in Korean Cuisine Gochujang is a type of jang (장). The term Jang (장) refers to fermented sauces or pastes used in Korean cooking. Other fermented sauces include: These fermented condiments have been staples in Korean kitchens for centuries, each carrying deep cultural meaning and unique flavor profiles. Nutritional Value When you learn the value of gochujang, you might want to add it to a lot more food. Through the fermentation process, Jang (장) not only develops in flavor but also in nutritional value. These types of jang are rich in probiotics and antioxidants produced during the fermentation process. The History and Origins of Gochujang (고추장) The origins of gochujang can be traced back to the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897), although the chili peppers (고추) themselves were only introduced to Korea in the late 16th century, likely through Portuguese traders via Japan. Before that, early Korean sauces were based on fermented grains and beans, like meju (메주), the base for both doenjang (된장) and ganjang (간장). Gochujang and the Japanese Occupation During the Japanese occupation (1910–1945), traditional Korean foods like gochujang and kimchi became symbols of resistance. Throughout this time period, the Japanese planted red peppers across Korea because they considered them poison, but Koreans loved the spicy peppers and used them in everything instead of rejecting them. Therefore, oral tradition says that gochujang helped preserve Korean cultural identity during a time of intense cultural suppression, and they remain vital symbols of Korean pride today. Gochujang as a Cultural Symbol Much like kimchi (김치), gochujang is more than just food; it’s a representation of Korean identity. Families often pass down their own gochujang recipes from generation to generation, and making this paste at home was a communal activity, particularly in rural areas. Large earthenware pots, known as onggi (옹기), were traditionally used to ferment gochujang, keeping it for years at a time. Gochujang’s Regional Variations (고추장의 지역별 차이) Different regions in Korea have their own unique versions of gochujang, with variations in sweetness, spice level, and fermentation methods. For example: These regional differences reflect the diverse agricultural practices and local preferences throughout Korea. As you learn about gochujang and try more varieties, you will likely find regions of gochujang that you prefer. For example, some South of Seoul volunteers prefer the rich earthy flavors of gochujang from Gangwon-do. Modern Uses of Gochujang (고추장의 현대적인 사용법) Today, gochujang is a global culinary sensation, thanks to the rise of Korean cuisine and the Hallyu (한류), or Korean Wave. It’s commonly used in traditional dishes like bibimbap (비빔밥), tteokbokki (떡볶이), and bulgogi (불고기), but it’s also finding its way into fusion cuisine, from gochujang-marinated chicken to gochujang-infused barbecue sauces and even baked goods. Non-Traditional Uses Gochujang’s versatility makes it perfect for modern, non-traditional dishes. You’ll see it used in: These dishes blend the traditional flavors of gochujang with creative, contemporary culinary techniques. The more you learn about gochujang, the more uses you may find for it in your own life. Traditional Gochujang Recipe (고추장 만드는 법) Want to make your own gochujang at home? Don’t need enough to feed a whole Korean family for a year? Here’s a traditional recipe you can try that’s been reduced down to an amount you can fit in your fridge. Ingredients (재료): Instructions (만드는 법): Notes (참고 사항): Gochjunang Sampling Now that you know more about gochujang, we recommend doing what we did with the market and conducting a blind gochujang sampling event. Grab some friends or co-workers and find different brands of gochujang or different sauces that include gochujang and taste them with fruits and vegetables. We taste-tested homemade gochujang, store-brand gochujang, apple gochujang, beef gochujang, samjang, and a few others. We tried them with carrots, apples, and cucumbers. Everyone thought that it would be hard to all the sauces but we ended up gobbling them all up. Conclusion: Gochujang, More Than a Paste Gochujang (고추장) is more than a condiment—it’s a cultural icon, a symbol of Korean identity, and a testament to the art of fermentation. Whether you’re making it at home or using store-bought gochujang, this spicy-sweet paste has a versatility that can transform any dish, from traditional Korean favorites to modern fusion creations. Ready to give this time-honored recipe a try? Start fermenting your own gochujang and connect with a tradition that’s been passed down through generations. Visit Songtan Market Make sure to visit the Songtan Market to pickup homemade gochujang for your kitchen. Traditional Market Events Make time to visit learn about gochujang and other ingredients at traditional markets and attend their events when possible. Learning about Korean food through stories and experiences is the best way to make it part of life. Seoraksan National Park: What to Know https://blog.southofseoul.net/seoraksan-national-park-what-to-know/ Thu, 14 Sep 2023 02:00:17 +0000 https://blog.southofseoul.net/?p=18260 SOS.SEC Sponsored Content

Information about Seoraksan often feels rather vague. To be honest, the first time we went we weren’t sure how to pick the right visitor center and which trail folks considered “hiking Seoraksan.” This is the blog we wish we could have found on the topic. About Seoraksan National Park Nestled in the eastern part of South Korea, Seoraksan National Park is a haven for nature enthusiasts, history buffs, and spiritual seekers. With its majestic peaks, lush forests, and rich cultural heritage, it’s no wonder that Seoraksan National Park is a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists. This blog post delves into various aspects of the national park to help you access all it has to offer. History of Seoraksan National Park Seoraksan National Park, established in 1970, exists as one of the oldest and most revered national parks in South Korea. The name ‘Seorak’, translates to ‘Snowy Crags Mountains’. This aptly describes the snow-capped peaks when they dominate the landscape during winter. However, the snow-capped peaks only last for a short time and many will visit when the peaks are hot and dry. There is not enough altitude for snowy peaks year-round. The mountain of Seoraksan, located in the Seoraksan National Park, has a significant place throughout Korean history. Various historical records mention its beauty and significance. To protect such history, in 1982, UNESCO designated Seoraksan National Park as a Biosphere Preservation District, further emphasizing its ecological and cultural importance. Seoraksan v. Seoraksan National Park When people talk about ‘Seoraksan’ they often mix the concept of Seoraksan (A specific mountain in Seoraksan National Park) with Seorkasan National Park (A larger park area with many mountains). When people talk or write about ‘Seoraksan’ they may be talking about hiking the specific mountain or hiking other mountains in the park itself. This can cause some confusion when making trip plans. It’s a bit of a New York, NY situation. Understanding this distinction can help you ask clarifying questions about trips and excursions. However, keep in mind that non-Koreans may not realize they are mixing two concepts since they don’t realize a difference exists. The most common access point to Seoraksan National Park is as follows: About the Hiking Trails at Seoraksan National Park Seoraksan National Park boasts a variety of hiking trails suitable for all levels of hikers. From leisurely walks to challenging ascents, there’s something for everyone. There are events that you can register for with the Korean National Park Service. A few of the popular day-trip hiking trails include: If you look at the map below you will see that there are multiple visitor centers within Seoraksan National Park. Each visitor center offers access to different hikes and mountains within the National Park. About the Buddha One highlight of Seoraksan National Park is the giant bronze Buddha. Located about a ten-minute walk from the entrance of Sinheungsa Temple (신흥사(설악산), it towers 10 meters high. If you would like to know more about this magnificent Buddha, check out our blog: About the Cable Car For those who wish to enjoy the Seoraksan National Park’s beauty without the exertion of hiking, the Seoraksan Cable Car is a perfect choice. The ride offers a bird’s-eye view of the park, taking passengers up to Gwongeumseong Fortress. From there, one can enjoy panoramic views of the park and its surroundings. HOWEVER, THE WAIT for the cable car CAN BE HOURS LONG or even sold out for the day! Don’t expect to show up during the prime fall viewing hours or on a spring weekend and walk right onto the cable car. You need to arrive very early in the morning and get those tickets. About the Temple Sinheungsa Temple, located within Seoraksan National Park, is a testament to Seoraksan’s rich spiritual heritage. This ancient Buddhist temple, with its iconic giant Buddha statue, is a place of peace and reflection. The temple’s history dates back to the 7th century, and it has undergone several restorations over the years. As always, remember that Buddhist temples are active religious institutions. They allow tourism with an understanding that visitors respect the religious traditions. In fact, you can also visit Sinheungsa Temple for a temple stay. When visiting temples, it’s important to respect the religious aspects of the space. Learn more about Korean Buddhist Temple Etiquette here. Best Season to Visit Seoraksan is beautiful year-round with each season offering a unique experience. We have personally visited the park in every single season and found it completely enjoyable in our eyes. We would go to Seoraksan National Park every week if we could. Here are our quick notes for each season along with some harsh realities: Food, Cafes, and Rest There are many restaurants and a few cafes in Seoraksan National Park near the temple, Buddha statue, and cable car. We also usually stop at one of the beautiful cafes for a little tasty beverage and eat lunch or dinner in the park. To be honest, we have only hiked the mountain twice, we usually just go to relax in the trees, take a little walk around the temples, and grab a meal. Don’t feel like you have to do anything hard to enjoy Seoraksan National Park. You are allowed to skip all the mountain climbing and hurrying about. Where to Stay The hotels right near the Seoraksan National Park entrance tend to be expensive and older. We don’t recommend those with a love for Western-style accommodations with limited time in Korea stay near the entrance. The culture shock or price may feel uncomfortable. Instead, we recommend staying in Sokcho or Yangyang along the coast. Nearby Attractions to Seoraksan National Park Seoraksan National Park’s beauty doesn’t end within its boundaries. Here are some nearby attractions to consider: In conclusion, Seoraksan National Park is a treasure trove of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and spiritual significance. Whether you’re an avid hiker, a history enthusiast, or someone seeking peace and reflection, Seoraksan promises an unforgettable experience. If you haven’t heard about Goseong, Gangwondo, you’ve been missing out. The top right corner of the country sits above the 36th parallel and offers stunning views, beaches, and a rural atmosphere that takes you back in time. It’s one of our favorite parts of Korea. About Goseong, Gangwon-do The county of Goseong in Gangwondo borders North Korea above the 36th parallel. Due to its previously difficult-to-access location, the area has not developed as quickly as other parts of the country. Therefore, Goseong exists as a hidden gem nestled within the breathtaking landscapes of Northwestern South Korea. You can see its location in the following map. Now that we have put Goseong into context, let’s explore the wonders of the area so that you can more easily plan your next trip. Sustainable Forests Goseong’s forests feel like some of the richest and most bio-diverse in Gangwondo. Their proximity to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) means that they are filled with wildlife and left remarkably untouched. The majestic pine, maple, and oak trees dominate the landscape, creating a symphony of colors that dance in harmony with any breeze that comes along. Every step taken amidst this natural forest paradise reveals new layers of beauty, as sun rays pierce through the leaves, sprinkling golden light upon the forest floor. In short, Goseong’s epic forests make it the place to let your mind rest. Gangwon Forestry Exhibition In fact, in 2023 South Korea made Goseong the center for the Gangwon Forestry Exhibition. The exhibition lasts for a month between late September and late October. The event is dedicated to sharing information about sustainable forestry and promoting the natural beauty of Gangwondo. Learn more about the Gangwon Forestry Exhibition here. A variety of the primary events for the Ganwon Forestry Exhibition are held at the Goseong exhibition area and sports park. Many other events may also be held there throughout the year. It’s a stunning space that can easily be converted for different events. A Tapestry of Fall Colors Because of the forests in Goseong, the arrival of fall is nothing short of stunning. As the seasons transition, the landscape of this mountain and coastal county becomes a mesmerizing tapestry of vibrant hues. The dense forests, predominantly of pine interspersed with maple and oak trees, don a radiant cloak of greens, reds, oranges, and golds. The juxtaposition of these fiery autumnal shades against the serene backdrop of the East Sea is a sight to behold. Every year, nature enthusiasts and photographers feel drawn to Goseong, not just for its pristine beauty but for this ephemeral display of fall foliage that promises a unique blend of coastal and woodland panoramas. Hiking in Goseong Many consider Goseong a hiker’s sanctuary, offering trails that unravel through the area’s pristine forests. If you visit the hiking paths in the fall, a canopy of reds, oranges, and gold envelops you. The scent of pine and crisp air invigorates the senses. From tranquil forest trails dotted with historic temples to routes that offer breathtaking vistas of the East Sea, Goseong’s diverse terrains cater to both novice walkers and seasoned trekkers, promising an unforgettable journey with every step. Hiking Safety Tips for Goseong Keep in mind that hiking in Goseong also has additional safety considerations. Due to its location, the country has some issues that may not be as common in other parts of Korea. When planning a hiking trip in Goseong remember it has: We recommend always hiking with a partner in this part of Korea. In addition, always keep friends posted with your trail plans and coordinate check-in times. Finally, this is a very different hiking experience than the busy trails in other parts of the country. Biking You can also enjoy stunning bike rides in Goseong. So, pack up your bikes to enjoy the roads and trails. Here is a small bike course for a weekend adventure. Seascapes and Sunrises Goseong isn’t just about forests it also has stunning beaches. The area boasts breathtaking views of the East Sea with many long and expansive swimming beaches. Imagine autumnal mountains juxtaposed against serene seaside sunrises. We have been swimming there late into September. History and Sightseeing Goseong’s geographical position places it near North Korea, making it historically significant. This proximity has seen the town play a pivotal role in Korea’s tumultuous history. Dive into tales of the past at the Hwajinpo Castle and other heritage sites. This majestic villa, set against the backdrop of Hwajinpo Lake, was used by North Korean leaders before the Korean War. Preserved and converted into a museum, today, it showcases a fascinating glimpse into the lives of its former residents and the region’s history. Therefore, visitors can explore the castle’s beautifully landscaped gardens, intricate architecture, and historical artifacts that shed light on the period preceding the division of Korea. Overlooking the Korean DMZ (Demilitarized Zone), Goseong Unification Observatory provides a unique and poignant perspective on one of the world’s most heavily fortified borders. From the observatory’s viewing decks, visitors can get close-up views of the DMZ and observe North Korean territory with binoculars. Information panels and exhibitions help visitors understand the ongoing tensions between North and South Korea and the desire for reunification. Located in the heart of Goseong, the Cretaceous Period Dinosaur Park brings visitors face-to-face with the fascinating world of dinosaurs. In addition, the museum showcases various fossils and footprints discovered in the area, including dinosaur eggs and skeletons. Through interactive exhibits and educational displays, visitors can learn about the geological history and the ancient creatures that once roamed the region. Nearby, Dinosaur Ridge offers an opportunity to see actual dinosaur footprints embedded in the rocky landscape, providing a sense of wonder and connecting visitors to the ancient past. Scattered throughout the Goseong region, these serene and sacred sites offer insights into Korea’s rich Buddhist heritage and its influence on the local culture. Visitors can immerse themselves in the relaxing atmosphere as they explore the beautiful temple halls, intricate artwork, and peaceful gardens. Geonbongsa Temple was rebuilt due to the destruction that occurred during intense battles during the Korean War. Also, some other notable temples in the area include Cheongryongsa Temple and Jeongmyeongsa Temple, each with its architectural style and historical significance. What is the meaning of Arirang? https://blog.southofseoul.net/what-is-meaning-arirang/ Fri, 01 Sep 2023 04:35:00 +0000 https://blog.southofseoul.net/?p=17998 SOS.SEC Sponsored Content

When you live or travel in Korea, you may hear people talk about ‘Arirang’ but what is the meaning? People may use this word in many different ways that leave you wondering, “Exactly what is this? What specific thing does ‘Arirang’ represent?” Well, it turns out, that Arirang could be many things and it started with a song. Keep reading to the end, it’s worth it. Arirang the Song The first meaning of “Arirang” is simple, it’s a song. In fact, it’s the most popular traditional folk song in Korea. However, when talking about “Arirang” Koreans will tell you that it’s not just a popular song. Instead, hearing and singing the song reaches the soul of Korea or ‘Han’. The song and the emotions you feel listening to the song encapsulate the spirit, history, and emotions of the Korean people. History of “Arirang” and Its Meaning Historians can’t clearly trace the origins of the song “Arirang” however, some believe it originated many centuries ago in Jeongseon, Gangwon-do. The people sang a song that tells a tale of love, separation, and the longing for reunion. Its poignant lyrics and haunting melody express the universal themes of sorrow, love, and hope, making it resonate deeply with those who hear it. Interestingly, there are several regional variations of “Arirang,” each with its own distinct melody and lyrics, reflective of the local culture and experiences of the specific regions in Korea. Among the most notable versions are the Jeongseon Arirang, Miryang Arirang, and Jindo Arirang. Additionally, historians do not agree on the exact meaning of the word Arirang. No one knows exactly what the particular word means, but they know how it feels. UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage In 2012, the significance of “Arirang” was globally recognized when UNESCO inscribed it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This recognition was not just for the song itself but also for the cultural practices, performances, and traditions associated with it. Source of Comfort During Japanese Occupation Throughout history, “Arirang” has been a source of inspiration, comfort, and resistance. During the Japanese occupation of Korea (1910-1945), it became an unofficial anthem of protest and hope among Koreans. Today, the song continues to hold a special place in the hearts of Koreans, often evoking feelings of nostalgia and pride. Of course, in general conversation, people might use Arirang to talk about a few other things as well. Let’s dig into that. Arirang the Movies In conversation, people also might refer to a movie when they say “Arirang”. The most recent movie with this title was a 2011 movie. The film is a deeply personal and introspective documentary directed by renowned South Korean filmmaker Kim Ki-duk. Departing from his previous works, this film offers an intimate look into Kim’s own psyche, struggles, and contemplations on life and cinema. Shot predominantly in his isolated cabin, the movie becomes a therapeutic process for Kim, as he reflects on a near-fatal accident on a previous film set that deeply traumatized him, leading him to a self-imposed exile from filmmaking for three years. “Arirang” is named after the iconic Korean folk song, symbolizing the director’s emotional journey of heartbreak, introspection, and eventual reconciliation with his past. Raw, unfiltered, and at times, emotionally jarring, the film blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction. “Arirang” stands as a testament to the cathartic power of art, offering viewers an unvarnished window into the soul of one of Korea’s most provocative filmmakers. Keep in mind that this is only the most recent Arirang movie. There is more to learn about so feel free to go down that rabbit hole. Arirang the Broadcasting Network As mentioned before, many English-speaking international residents mean Arirang TV when they say Arirang. They might not even know about the song or movie. Arirang TV is South Korea’s international English-language broadcasting network. Arirang was established in 1996 to promote a deeper understanding of Korea’s culture, history, and contemporary issues among global audiences. The organization offers a diverse array of programming, including news, cultural shows, documentaries, and entertainment. Arirang TV plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between Korea and the world. Which is why so many international residents know about it first. With Arirang’s content available in over 100 countries, the organization provides insightful perspectives on global and regional events, as well as highlighting Korea’s dynamic culture, Arirang stands as a beacon of cultural diplomacy in the digital age. Arirang the Festival This brings us to the Arirang Festival in Jeongseong, Gangwon-do. The Arirang Festival is a vibrant celebration of South Korea’s iconic folk song, “Arirang.” Held annually, this event pays homage to the song’s profound significance in Korean culture, embodying tales of love, separation, and longing. The festival showcases diverse performances, from traditional dance to contemporary interpretations, echoing the rich tapestry of regional Arirang variations. Visitors to the festival feel immersed in a cultural extravaganza, encompassing music, crafts, parades, and mouth-watering Korean cuisine. More than just entertainment, the Arirang Festival serves as a poignant reminder of Korea’s historical resilience, shared identity, and the unifying power of a melody cherished through generations. It’s honestly a magical crash course into Korean traditional culture. A must attend when you live in the country. Now that we’ve talked about all the different things “Arirang” might mean in conversation, I’d also like to talk about what Arirang has come to mean for me after over 13 years in Korea. My Relationship with “Arirang” When I first came across Arirang it was in reference to Arirang TV which many English speakers come across while researching Korea. However, as I started learning more about Korean culture I began hearing about the song and the cultural concepts of Arirang. The way I heard it used left me confused about what the term “Arirang” event meant. Eventually, I started researching it to try and figure out what all the fuss was about. When I finally heard the song, I didn’t understand the hype. It sounded like any Korean folk song. It’s nice but I didn’t understand why everyone got so excited. However, after about 5 years of living in Korea that all started to change in ways I never expected. As my cultural entanglements with Korean culture grew, so did my feelings when I heard Arirang. With each wedding, funeral, meal, conversation, and experience Arirang came alive. It became the farms, the late nights, the funerals, the weddings, the joys, the failures, the fights, the fears, and the heartaches that I shared with my community. Even just thinking about Arirang can make emotions start to bubble up. The thought and the sound drive you deep into Han. Of course “Arirang” will never have the same meaning for me as it does for a citizen of Korea. My relationship with ‘han’ as an immigrant is uniquely my own. It’s based on shared histories, experiences, and support. There are parts of my life now that will only be understood by people who live a countryside Korean life. Such memories are what I feel in “Arirang.” What Meaning Do You Find in Arirang? If you have lived in Korea for a long time, finding your own meaning in Arirang can feel important. It’s like a present you build for yourself in your heart that you can take with you to your next destination. Visit the Arirang Festival with Plus Planner If you would like to learn more about Arirang and discover more of Korea, join one of Plus Planners’ Arirang Festival trips. They often have group trips leaving from Seoul and Pyeongtaek. You can also learn more about Plus Planner in the blog post below. Wondering what a Field Day in Korea looks like? What games do attendees play and what it would be like to attend? We’ve had these questions throughout the years thought it would be nice to share the PIEF Field Day event from April 2023 to show what you might expect from a Korean Field Day event in the future. Listen to the BlogCast Don’t want to read? Listen to the South of Seoul BlogCast which provides accessible content through the use of AI technology. We don’t have time to read each article but we do our best to make more of our content accessible. If you would like to join our Accessibility Team apply to volunteer with South of Seoul. What is Field Day In Korea, we LOVE playing games together. Every year, the schools have something called Sports Day or Field Day where different classes compete against each other while playing fun team games. The name of the event may be called either Sports Day or Field Day depending on who translated the Korean name. For this blog post, we will use the term Field Day. In addition to having Field Days at schools, Korean communities may throw Field Days for families and kids to get together and play games. In 2023, the Pyeongtaek International Exchange Foundation (PIEF) decided to create such an event that brings US Military Families and Pyeongtaek Citizens into the community together. Add Field Day to Your Bucket List If you live in South Korea, you should try to attend at least one Field Day while living here. Joining a Field Day brings you into the heart of the culture around you. It’s where you fall in love with the Korean passion for games, friendly competition, and cheering each other on. Field Days hold warming and it’s where you can often make new friends. Honestly, go out of your way to get involved in one of these events if you see it. The following 20 second video shows a glimps of the fun had at PIEF Field Day in 2023 despite the weather: If you live in South Korea, you should try to attend at least one Field Day event while living here. Joining a Field Day brings you into the heart of the culture around you. It’s where you fall in love with the Korean passion for games, friendly competition, and cheering each other on. Field Days hold a warm feeling and it’s where you can often make new friends. Go out of your way to get involved in one of these events if you see it because they help you connect with the deeper social vibe. Field Days and Weather Field Days often occur outside in large fields or play areas. Since such events include large numbers of people and rowdy events that need space, it’s uncommon for such events to be canceled or moved inside due to weather. This means attendees should come prepared for anything. However, if there is a lot of rain attendance may be limited. The 2023 PIEF Field Day experienced some surprisingly cold wind and rain in 2023. There were a few touch-and-go moments when we all thought, “Maybe this won’t happen today” but it all worked out in the end. PIEF had emergency raincoats for everyone and there were tents for attendees to stand under. Having this type of cold weather in late April in South Korea almost never happens so everyone was caught off guard. It’s unlikely an event planned at the end of April will ever have weather quite like this again. Many of the activities need to be changed or modified for the event due to the weather conditions, however, the organizers kept everything moving and managed the changes with surprising grace. The Hardcore Fun Lovers Showed Up Even with bad weather, die hard fun lovers show up to Sports Day ready to play. Even for PIEF Field Day 2023, a few hundred awesome and excited attendees showed up to PIEF Field Day and put their hearts into it. Kids and parents let themselves embrace the fun to play games and laugh together in the rain. The smaller crowd made the event feel more communal and folks had more time together. Honestly, we think this was the ideal size for a Field Day event. The mood was perfect. Everyone Joins a Team For Field Days, attendees join teams. Each team needs to work together to complete different tasks and games. In mixed age events like the one organized by PIEF, the Field Day games include activities for adults and kids so that everyone could get involved. Not every game included everyone from each team. This allowed team members time to rest and it also meant that those who just wanted to watch could feel free to do so. Some international parents didn’t realize they would be included in the PIEF Field Day games but they quickly adapted. It was fun to see people working together and having a great time despite the language barriers. There is something especially heartwarming about watching an adult’s guard come down as they start to relax into the fun. The Field Day Games In Korea, events like PIEF Field Day hire special companies who bring out very fun games for everyone to play. This means the games may change each year and they may bring games you’ve never tried before. However, they often have many familiar elements regarding teamwork, racing around cones, and general mayhem. Additionally, the event planners try to make sure the events and activities aren’t too complicated. They keep activities simple and easy for the average person to do. No one needs to be a professional athlete or especially good at activities. You just need a heart for fun and the desire the cheer on others having fun. The MC Makes the Day Usually, the MC makes or breaks a Korean Field Day event. Their job is to be funny, get people involved, make people feel comfortable, and keep the good vibes rolling. You can’t imagine how hard that can be to accomplish when you are MCing an event in two languages. Thankfully, PIEF hired a wonderful MC for the event who made both English speakers and Korean speakers feel comfortable. South of Seoul volunteers have always been impressed by the effort PIEF organizers put into finding the right MC and organization to partner with for their events. The PIEF organizers always strive to find teams that can smoothly go between cultures and make everyone feel they belong. Obviously, there will be confusing language issues here and there, and they handle such hurdles with grace. Field Day Safety Since Field Day can be hectic, event organizers like PIEF take planning for safety very seriously. Attendees do sign waiver forms and emergency services keeps an ambulance on hand “just in case.” They even communicate the nearby hospitals and information related to how injuries may be handled. South of Seoul partners with PIEF to support their community development work and we love what they do! PIEF has two locations in Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. One PIEF location is in Sinjang-dong near Osan Air Force Base: The second PIEF location is in Paengsong-eup near Camp Humphreys US military base: SOS.SEC Sponsored ContentENG: South of Seoul Strategy and Education Consulting (SOS SEC) in a Korean company that specializes in bridging the gap between Korean culture and other diverse cultures.
