There is an excellent place for camping between Camp Humphreys and Osan Air Force Base in Pyeongtaek that is family-friendly. The camping sites are connected with Sopung Gardens which is a large park with walkways that wander through a beautiful wetland. This is a wonderful and affordable place for Pyeongtaek families to get away from the hustle and bustle without having to do any extensive driving. The park and camping include:
- 3 camping grounds
- 2 kids park areas
- 1 small area for kids to see chickens, goose, peacock, and feed and pet rabbits
- A wood art store for kids to paint and play with wood chips.
- A maze
- Bike path
- Walking path
Camping at Sopung Gardens and camping areas require reservations which you can make online. You can book your camping trip here: https://www.pyeongtaek.go.kr/main.do We recommend getting some help from a Korean speaker when booking your reservation since the English version of the website may have frustrating glitches and the process could be less frustrating if you ask for help and use the Korean version of the website.
SOS Culture Note 1: You don’t have to camp overnight. Many South Korean families will go camping for the day and not stay the night. You will often find the park and camping area very busy until the evening rolls around. Then many families will pack-up and head home.
SOS Culture Note 2: South Korea is a very social country so don’t be surprised if people come to talk with you or offer you food. It doesn’t always happen, but it often does. People may offer you food or other things they think you might need. They may also offer advice about how to camp or do things in a more traditionally Korean way. Roll with it. This is part of the experience.
