Seoul Musical Theater Date Night Itinerary https://blog.southofseoul.net/seoul-musical-theater-date-night/ Tue, 23 Nov 2021 05:14:49 +0000 https://blog.southofseoul.net/?p=6926 Chad Card, MA. SLT and Brian Rich, MSW

Seoul doesn’t have to be all day, sometimes we just pop into Seoul for an afternoon or evening date night. Getting to Seoul from Pyeongtaek Itinerary On the bus headed to AK Plaza to catch a train to Seoul to see Billy Elliot at the D-Cube Art Center. We could have driven, but the bus is more fun! Trains are a great way to spend some time together relaxing and catching up on your week. Grab Dinner Near Yeongdeungo Station Gotta love happy accidents. After getting off at Yeongdeungo Station, we walked to the BBQ joint we had seen before, but it was closed. We pulled up Naver, hit the restaurant tab, and off we went checking out potential dinner places. We found @yankeesburger_pizza and loved it: the vibe, music, pizza, and burgers. Mullae is such an interesting neighborhood – part industrial shops, part art shops, part cool pubs/restaurants, and part cafe. This neighborhood might become our tailgate tradition before the musicals. Take a Slow Walk to the Theater We still had some time before he needed to head to the theater, so we explored this interesting neighborhood, Mullae-dong: industrial shops juxtaposed with hip alleyways full of wine bars, pubs, restaurants, and cafes. (PS – loved the Azit shop signage.) Coffee and Dessert are Always a Must There was a crowd outside this cafe, so we checked it out. @cafe_giggle is one that we will come back too – great drinks and cakes. Highly recommend the salted caramel and vanilla nut crumble lattes. Loved the ambiance as well! Continue Your Walk and Enjoy the Street Art We zig-zagged our way to the D-Cube, making a list of galleries and culinary establishments to check out next time we come to see a show. Can’t get enough of the street art, so here are a few more pics. Stop at an Art Gallery From street to gallery, we loved these pieces by Kim Han Ki @gallerymullae. Enjoy a Show at the Dcube Arts Center An easy stroll from the Mullae Creative Village to the @dcubeartscenter brought us to the pinnacle of our day of art enjoyment—Billy Elliot The Musical. The D-Cube Art Center is a great Theatre with not a bad seat in the house. The talent for these shows never ceases to amaze! We have loved every performance we have seen in Korea and we never mind if they aren’t in English. Fall Apple Picking in South Korea is the Perfect Day Out https://blog.southofseoul.net/fall-apple-picking-in-south-korea-is-the/ Tue, 02 Nov 2021 04:22:14 +0000 https://blog.southofseoul.net/?p=6585 Chad Card, MA. SLT and Brian Rich, MSW

Who wants to go fall apple picking in South Korea? We highly recommend it. This is what our trip looked like. We look forward to maybe going again. Where we went for Apple Picking This weekend we were recreating our New England apple picking traditions here in South Korea by visiting an apple orchard about 1 hour from Pyeongtaek, South Korea called Yesan Apple and Wine Picking. This is a popular location for ex-pats who want to embrace Korean culture while also experiencing memories of home. We didn’t have a reservation when we went to pick apples. We simply showed up ready to get involved. When we entered the main building, there was a counter where we could let them know if we wanted to pick apples, eat BBQ, and/or have dessert. That was where we registered for the day. Just so you know, if you pick apples, someone shows you the row and how to pick. If you get BBQ, you take your receipt outside and they plate it. Then by the BBQ there is free wine tasting. Finally, they announce a distillery tour and you can do that. It’s kind of like a build-your-own-adventure. Now that you know where to go and how to do it, this is what our apple picking day looked like. About Yesan-gun, South Korea Yesan-gun is about 2 hours from where we live in Pyeongtaek, South Korea. The name “Yesan” might be used to refer to the larger Administrative District or the small city at the center of the district. You can see the Yesan-gun area surrounded by a blue line in the image below. Yesan-gun tends to be a quiet, sparsely populated agricultural, which makes it perfect for apple picking and other agricultural experiences. Our Wonderful Experience Picking Apples For us, Yesan Apple Farm was just right because it brought us together with friends, BBQ, and apple picking. It was nice to head to a destination that made our day trip easy as pie. The apple farm also had a wine/brandy tour with all the products ade from fruit from this farm: apple wine, blueberry wine, apple brandy, and apple soju. Who Will Love Apple Picking Families, couples, and friends will love a day trip to Yesan for fall apple picking in South Korea. Visiting this location is best done by car or on an organized tour. It’s especially convenient for those living near Camp Humphreys or Osan Air Force Base in Pyeongtaek-si, Asan, si, or Cheonan-si. Should You Go to a Yesan Today? You will enjoy the parks the most if you go either on a day with good air quality or in your preferred weather. However, you can also enjoy the parks if you go prepared for incidental weather and the current air conditions. Here is what is happening currently in Pyeongtaek so that you can determine what is right for you right now. Current Air Quality in Yesan Air quality and weather change throughout the day. However, having an idea of what the air quality is right now can help make decisions easier. You can download the Air Matters App for your phone to keep current on changing air quality conditions throughout the day. You can even set up alerts. Would You Like Help Coordinating Apple picking? Korea has many different agricultural locations and experiences across the country. You can either make reservations for this experience or use different services to find other locations or make reservations. Don’t be afraid to try something different than what we did. Make the experience your own. Volunteer with South of Seoul Interested in working with a fun team of talented volunteers? Looking for a bit of romance? Then, it is time to grab your date and go on an adventure! About Pyeongtaek’s fancy date night locations The concept of the western-style “fancy date” night has begun to slowly spread across South Korea. Since this is a developing concept in rural South Korea, you want to leave space for “fancy” to have different meanings than the west. However, the space might look different. For example, the fancy dinner might not be western food, it might not have wine as an option, it might feel a little formal and informal at the same time. These new experiences can create an even better date night than you could have imagined. Therefore, exploring new cultures, concepts, and experiences can bring you closer as you bond over navigating the experience. In fact, “couples who tried new things together were found to be most satisfied in their relationships.” There are recommendations across Pyeongtaek and in surrounding areas. However, we have not focused on one area of Pyeongtaek in this blog post. Instead, we take you to many different areas so that you always have something new to explore together. Suwon Fortress and Chicken Street Date Day https://blog.southofseoul.net/suwon-date-at-the-fortress/ Fri, 25 Jun 2021 03:13:28 +0000 https://blog.southofseoul.net/?p=5115 KimchiRednecks

What to do: Day Visiting Suwon Fortress from Pyeongtaek Hwaseong Fortress covers a large area in Suwon, South Korea. We decided to head up to the area from the Osan Air Force base area of Pyeongtaek to see some of the Suwon fortress that we missed the first time we visited. We parked in the area by Janganum Gate (Also Romanized as Changnyongmun Gate).  After parking, we purchased tickets for the trolley around the city. The trolley costs around 4,000 won per person and if you bring headphones, you are able to listen to the tour in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Even without headphones, it is a nice tour around part of the fortress and you can take photos from the trolley as well. We got some great shots along the ride as well as video. Where to eat: Grab some Korean fried chicken on Suwon chicken street Upon returning to the Changnyongmun Gate, we walked down the wall towards Buksumun (Floodgate/Hwahongmun) and walked over to Suwon’s Chicken Street for lunch. This is a bustling area usually with lines at the most popular restaurants. If you go during the week, note some of the locations may be closed due to working all weekend.  Our plan for chicken street was simple, order a small amount at each location so we could try multiple locations. One of the locations we stopped at was Dae-Bong Chicken. The staff spoke some English and were very friendly. The chicken was fabulous. We tried a couple of other locations but because we went on a Monday many were closed.  Where to have a chat: A Star Cafe has a beautiful view of Suwon Fortress To round out our afternoon, we ended up at It’s A Star Cafe across from Hwahongmun Gate. Hwahnogmuch Gate is where the waterfall is located. This cafe is three floors and you can get a great view of the fortress from the rooftop area. It was a neat location and just what we needed for our walk back up to the Changnyongmun Gate. This proved to be a great day of exploring and we look forward to coming back on a busier day to get a more thorough tasting of the offerings of Chicken Street. The great thing about Suwon and the fortress area is that there is always something to do, shopping, eating or just exploring the area’ Popular Suwon Fortress Gates visited on this date Discover more of the Kimchi Rednecks on Youtube! Movie Date During the Pandemic https://blog.southofseoul.net/movie-date-during-the-pandemic/ Fri, 18 Jun 2021 04:05:29 +0000 https://blog.southofseoul.net/?p=5063 KimchiRednecks

Update: The pandemic might be over, but this blog post still includes great info for those going on a movie date in Pyeongtaek. We keep these posts live and searchable to provide insight into pandemic life in Korea for those that may search the topic over time. Watching Movies Again as the Pandemic Lingers Recently, we decided that it was time to get out and go back to the movies. Prior to the pandemic, we enjoyed going to AK Plaza’s CGV and watching the blockbusters on the big screen. With the release of Fast and Furious 9, we were very eager to see how things had changed and see all the action in the theater. What it is like going to CGV at AK Plaza with Social Distancing Precautions We ordered our tickets online at http://www.cgv.co.kr/ticket/eng where you can choose the English Ticketing option and find the theater and movie you want to see. Then you can choose your movie time, your seats and pay for your tickets. Once you pay for your tickets, they give you a reservation code to pick up your tickets. When choosing your seating, please note that they have blocked off seats attempting social distancing. After a subway ride and grabbing a quick bite to eat, we went over to the theater area on the 8th floor. The concession area has multiple ordering kiosks for ordering your drinks and snacks. However, there is a sign on there that you have to eat any food before entering the theater. You are also only allowed to bring water and non-alcoholic drinks into the theater. So, if you love watching movies while eating popcorn or snacks, you will be a bit disappointed. The kiosks for picking up your tickets are still in the same area. You enter your reservation number and your ticket is printed. There are several tables in the concession area that you can eat there or sit and wait prior to your movie. Once in the theater, you must still continue to wear your mask. All in all, even though things looked quite different, we enjoyed our movie experience as much as any of the times prior to the pandemic.
