Lanae Rivers-Woods: Sushi in the United States has its own unique history and style which developed out of California in the 1970s. Westernized sushi is best known for dynamic rolls with strong flavor profiles. I fell in love with this type of sushi during my university days in Nashville, TN. When the culture shock of living in TN set in, I would eat my weight in mistake rolls (deep fried sushi rolls) and tempura shrimp rolls. It was my comfort food.
When I moved to Seattle, finding a great sushi restaurant to drown my sorrows became one of my top priorities. I found a few and became a fan of Seattle’s unique sauces and bold fish choices. However, As I traveled in Europe, Latin American, and across Asia I learned that Western style sushi is not always available globally and I missed it. When I moved to South Korea, I struggled to find the right sushi restaurant for my taste.
Thankfully, over the last five years Westernized sushi restaurants have become increasingly popular in Pyeongtaek. The one that I visit the most often is Sam’s Sushi. I love what they do there. It’s like a mix of what I fell in love with in Nashville and Seattle while also being their own thing. Do I know exactly why I love it? No I don’t. I also still love traditional Japanese sushi and Korean hwae but they don’t meet the same emotional need. For me, Sam’s Sushi tastes like home and there are days where that is the most important thing.
That said, Sam’s might be the right choice for me but they might not be the right choice for you. We all bring our own personal histories to dinner with us.
